Performance Counseling
Just because you're a high performer doesn't mean you don't struggle with anxiety. You can be at the top of your game and still feel like a failure because of constantly second-guessing yourself or just feeling overly stressed and overwhelmed too often. This is exhausting. And it takes energy and attention away from where it's needed.

Perhaps you can't seem to deliver the performances you know you are capable of consistently. You are preoccupied with what others are thinking or with your self-critical voice that berates you for not being good enough.
High-performance training in the arts has traditionally focused on the technical and physical aspects of performing; performers in the business domain focus on the content that needs to be delivered. Typically, little consideration is given to the psychological dimensions that make or break a performance in any domain, whether public speaking or playing a music audition. In contrast, high-performing athletes commonly employ sports psychologists as they understand the necessity of training the craft of performance - which, though related, is a different skill set!

Over time the high demands that are placed on you can take a physical and mental toll. Together we will look at ways you can create a healthy balance in the various domains of your life. We'll figure out how to incorporate rest-and-recovery and meaningful self-care so you don't suffer from burn-out.

Psychological Skills Training
If you are interested in enhancing performance in a particular area, I offer Psychological Skills Training (PST) as a qualified Performance Psychology practitioner. PST is learning to regulate your body and mind to optimize performance through various techniques.
Strategies can include
-
body regulation (e.g., relaxation),
-
imagery
-
mental rehearsal,
-
goal-setting
-
self-talk
-
systematic desensitization,
-
attentional control
-
mindfulness
-
pre-performance routines
-
cognitive restructuring

All high-level performers use at least some of these strategies, and most people can benefit from adding to their "toolbox" of psychological skills.

I also use ACT and EMDR to alleviate performance anxiety. You can learn more about these approaches on the therapies page.
